In October 2010, the James Beard Foundation launched an annual national food conference. Each year we will bring together thought leaders from diverse areas of expertise to address the most important issues facing our industry and our food system. This year at the Pew Conference Center in Washington, D.C., we are addressing the issues of sustainability and public health in the foodservice industry with a diverse group of experts that includes JBF Award–winning chefs, farmers, corporate foodservice executives, philanthropists, urban planners, policy makers, agricultural experts, labor specialists, and others.
Many people and organizations have been working on these issues for years. But we see an important role for our Foundation and the people who support us to play. Prior to the conference we planned a national “listening tour” to hear what people in the industries of food and sustainability were working on. We wanted to know what concerned them the most, what projects excited them, what challenges they faced. We wanted to find people with interesting approaches to meaningful solutions. And we wanted to be able to engage and support our constituency of high profile chefs by providing them a seat at the table. The inspirational stories, the common themes, and the challenges we heard about at these regional meetings helped shape our D.C. agenda.
